Question:
Can your pouch burst, and the contents flow into your abdomen?

I am just curious, if you ate so much that your pouch could just open up and then all the contents just sit in your abdomen digestive jucies and food? I know it's kinda gross but it's a real concern for me, it seems very scary.    — [Anonymous] (posted on January 15, 2002)

This is just my humble opinion, but I think you would vomit long before your pouch could get filled to the bursting point. Hugs, Joy

Almost all gastric bypass surgeries are transected now. That means your stomach is actually cut in two in addition to stapling. Within only a few days the area where your stomach was cut has healed with scar tissue. The staples combined with the scar tissue would make it virtually impossible for it to actually burst open. Like the previous poster, should you lost control and eat to such extreme excess you then vomiting would probably prevent you from actually rupturing your stomach. We're all scared but the possibility of this happening is so unlikely that I'd say you can put that fear to rest.

Did you ever worry about you own stomach bursting when you ate too much? I hope not. So I don't think you need to worry just because it is smaller. No matter how strong that Big Mac was, its not gonna break through your stoach wall and leak into your gut!!

As a matter of fact there was a man in the group of people that I went through surgery with and as soon as he was home (3 days after surger) he overate and there was oatmeal floating in his drain. Dr. Frezza then had to perform another surger on this man to repair the damage he had done. When I heard about this I asked the same question you are now and I was told that only the first week could this possibly happen after that you should be healed enought that you would vomit before your stomach burst open. I personally think this man slipped through all of the evaluations because obviously he was NOT ready to make a lifestyle change. If you are committed to the changes required I wouldn't worry.
