Question:
Hemorrhoidectomy in concert with gastric bypass?
Rectal surgeon said that I need to have one hemorrhoid removed, and maybe a few tags. Is it possible to have this surgery at the same time? It seems very desirable, in consideration of the epidural for pain management and the liquid diet. Not to mention, one less gallon of that co-lite stuff I would have to endure!!! — nransford (posted on January 12, 2002)

Hi.. I know someone who had both at once and it was a nightmare for her.
Pain from the hemmoroid surgery was pretty tremendous and sitting very
difficult...then the stem to stern incision for the WLS, could not get
comfortable in any position. She said if she were to do it together
again...no way. Hope it helps.

I had hemmorhoid surgery in Feb. 2001, had 3 internal ones removed (they
were thrombosed, had blood clots in them which made it worse). It was by
far the worst thing I have ever been through! My surgeon told me that
plenty of people have the surgery and do just fine, are back at work fast
but I was NOT one of them! I had an open SRVG on Dec. 11th, even with my 5
inch abd. incision it has not been nearly as bad as the "butt"
surgery, OUCH!!!! If there is anyway not to have them at the same time I
sure wouldn't do it. Of course I don't know whether yours are internal or
external and you could be one of the lucky ones and sail through it. Just
my two cents worth!

I also have a "bottom" problem, a rectocele. My surgeon
would not even consider fixing that at the same time as an RNY. He
considers the RNY "clean" surgery, and the rectocele
"dirty" surgery. Because of the greatly increased risk of
infection, and stress to the body overall, he said NO WAY. Bet your surgeon
would say the same thing.

I know that this comes a little late but maybe it will be helpful for
anyone who has to have this surgery. I am a nursing student and I had my
surgery done in the middle of the semester. My surgeon assured me that the
"discomfort" would last for about 2 weeks and after that things
would get back to normal. I thought that the surgery would be a breeze
because I have had two C-sections and have had nothing more than slight
discomfort but this procedure is not easy at all. I guess it is because it
is such a sensitive area but the pain was horrible nothing works for it and
I was afraid to eat because I was afraid to go to the bathroom. Well I had
the surgery Oct. 30, 2003 and I am just starting to return to normal now
May 22, 2004. I don't want to scare anyone but I just think that surgeons
should be truthful about what the patient should expect post-op.
