Question:
5 Mos. Post Op and my eyes are going BAD!!!!

Hi Everyone!!! I am just now 5 months post op, and am having a problem with my eyesight changing DRASTICALLY..LIKE 3 prescription changes in 3 months. Dr thought that it might be the Prevacid that he had me on for ulcers so we stopped that...ANYONE ELSE had BIG changes in their eyesight or been on Prevacid and noticed changes in their vision????? Thanks All for all of you help......    — Joi G. (posted on January 10, 2002)

I noticed a change in my eyesight the first month post-op. The optometrist suggested that maybe it had been time for a check-up and a new prescription ANYWAY, but it's just that the surgery, anesthesia, etc., made it more acute. I still need to go. It's a $$$ thing. Don't have any right now.

If you were diabetic before surgery the dropping blood sugars post op will cause vision changes, and this is normal.

I wonder if it could it be a vitamin A deficiency? I know we malabsorb A, and it's involved w/ eyesite.

Before I had my surgery, my PCP (who is very supportive of the surgery) told me that one of her other patients who had the surgery was going blind, and they finally figured out that it was due to malnutrition. She told me this, I believe as a warning to be diligent about taking my vitamins. It is, however, still scary because I am not sure how much of the vitamins I take are acutally absorbed. I hope this is not the case for you, but hopefully your doctor can find out what is going on and halt you loss of sight quickly. Take Care.

Joi, I would not have written this except that the answer before me intrigued me. I usually get flamed for saying these things. I have been severely malnourished since about 6 months post op although i have done everything I can not to be. They are now looking into more surgery for me. But, I digress....because of the malnutrition, I have developed Sjogrens syndrome which most doctors believe is caused by malnutrition. I wrote this on here once before and was flamed but here it is again and if I can help you, then so be it. My eyesight is severely degenerating and the doctors do not give me a good prognosis. I say this to you because, most times, malnutrition can be helped in these surgeries..I am just the exception to the rule. Please, please get all your bloodwork done and then done some more. Don't let this problem get the best of you and don't let doctors tell you it's nothing. No one's eyesight goes that bad in that short of a time without a reason. FIND IT and don't stop until you do! Good luck to you.
