Question:
Anyone have tips for fighting low blood sugar after eating?
I'm 3 months out and almost every time I eat, I get sick for about 30-40 minutes afterward(very weak, nauseous). It doesn't seem to matter what I eat. My doctor says that it is low blood sugar and that it will take time for my body to adjust. Anyone else with this problem and have you found anything helpful? — [Anonymous] (posted on January 8, 2002)

i have had alot of problems with low blood sugar. but it is not after i eat
it is when i do not...like when i wake up in the morning. Not to contradict
your dr but unless he actually has you check your blood sugar at that time
it is not right of him to make that statement. I too have your problem
sometimes of feeling hot and nauseated after eating, it is usually when i
have eaten something i should not have though. Or if i ate it too fast.

Your symptoms do NOT sound like low blood sugar, which should be helped by
eating, not causing the sweating, etc. That sounds like classic dumping
syndrome, usually caused by eating something too high in sugar, fat, or
calories...or maybe you're eating too fast? Have you talked to surgeon or
the dietician? Best wishes.

I disagree with the past two posts...I have low blood sugar and it has been
verified with blood tests and I can get the shaky sweety feeling
anytime...whether I have just eaten something or not. I have eaten things
with no sugar or fat in them (ie pretzals) and have had an
"episode" Yes it sounds like dumping...but it's a different
feeling. My doctor told me it's because my body is trying to regulate how
it deals with breaking down the food and it's going to take a little while
for it to "find a new set point". Everytime I start to feel this
way, I take a few sips of OJ or suck on a hard candy and feel better pretty
quick...Have your doctor run some tests to verify this, but listen to your
doctor...he's the one with the MD after his name!!Good Luck!
