Question:
More information on the Lap-Band & insurance

I have been researching the lap-band. I see that not many members had had it done. What is the lap-band? And if you had it Did you have trouble with your insurance?    — [Anonymous] (posted on November 18, 2001)

I researched the lap band too--I drove 7 hours to the nearest dr to me that does the procedure--he told me that he band was only 40% effective as compared to the bypass that has an effective rate of about 75-80%--he also said thee BC/BS did not like to approve for lap band--because of the ineffectiveness---he also said patients were able to "cheat" the band and not suffer like bypass patients--the lap bad is only guaranteed for 7 years--he discouraged me from this type of surgery

The main reason I choose the bypass was so that myself and Jen would have the same surgery and eating rules. Drop me a email and I will send you the address for a message board of fine folks thats all about the band.

I was approved right away quite by accident. I was the first banded patient My Doctor had and I believe BC/BS didn't realize that this was the band and not the usual gastric by-pass. My banding was without one second of discomfort and to date I have lost 50 lbs. I was banded on Oct.15,2001 I love my band I can't imagine anyone having anything else. Since my banding my Doc. has asked me to write a paper that he is presenting to insurance groups we both feel that once they realize what a great device this is denials will soon be a thing of the past. Good luck to you, I am available to answer any questions. Cynthia Lull [email protected]

Humana HMO approved my lap-band. They have been impressed with the results from other patients they insure. It has minimal side effects, no hair loss, no dumping and it is now being done on an out-patient basis. Not to mention it's adjustable. I have three friends who each have lost over 100lbs in a year. The results are getting better now that the doctors are getting more experience. They have been doing the surgery for years in Europe and Germany. Sure the band last 7 years but you can get it replace-you can't say that about your intestine.
