Question:
Will WLS really work when I've tried every starvation diet known without results?
I'm just started researching WLS and my concern is that I've done every 750 cal (and even lower) diet known, sometimes quite consistently, but without results? Tell me how this is going to be different if it only helps me to eat significantly less. — [Anonymous] (posted on October 25, 2001)

Anon-- Yes! Weight Loss Surgry does work. I'm two years postop and still
don't believe it! There are many different types of surgery and they all
work differently. It's important you research it very well to understand
the differences. Some do as you say, only help you eat less. Other
surgeries help you eat less AND malasorb calories, so you physically, don't
absorb all the calories you eat. I have a long list of resources for the
different surgery types on my website at
(http://www.mywls.com/Surgery_Types/surgery_types.html). If you have any
questions, please feel free to email me. Take care for now.. --->>

I agree with the other poster. Yes, it will work. I have also done more
starvation diets than anything else. And it will be very important to
remember post op that this isn't a starvation diet. You MUST eat. Infact, I
have found that eating small amounts more times daily actually promotes the
weight loss. Alot of people want to go into ketosis - but I actually like
staying just on the verge of it. If I go into ketosis I stop loosing for a
while. So 4-5 small (2oz) meals does it for me. And plenty of water and
other liquids. Your body may think that you are on another starvation diet
and not want to let go - but it will learn.

YES! We've all tried every diet, starvation or otherwise, known to man.
The thing about WLS, is that I don't EVER feel like I'm on a diet. I'm at
my goal now after 8 months and not once have I felt deprived while getting
to this point. I'm satisfied, I'm healthy, and for me, it was the best
decision I've ever made. Good luck to you.

It's probably the *only* thing that will work. My rny allowed me
to eat less food; it also prevents me from metabolizing fats
and from metabolizing half the calories that I do eat. This
resulted in a 110lb. weight loss in a year. I have to follow some
rules; but basically, I don't even have to think about food. If I
eat 1200 calories a day, I use 600 calories and none of the fat.
If I eat reasonably, I'll never be fat again. No diet can do that.

You may not have been able to lose weight because you were starving
yourself. When you "starve" your body thinks you're never going
to feed it again and will not let go of anything. Even with WLS you MUST
eat in order to lose weight...eating (the right foods) frequently speeds up
the metabolism (yes, I know it sounds weird). Trust us, you WILL lose
weight, but you MUST eat AND drink LOADS of water.
YOU WILL LOSE 8-)
