Question:
I am 2 weeks post-op and haven't done any puree food yet. Is this normal?
I have gone directly to regular foods and it doesn't bother me. I can eat things like chicken (chopped) crackers, tuna fish, fish, turkey slices (deli thin). Does this mean I am not going to have problems with different foods and will be able to eat anything? I have lost 30 pounds in only 2 weeks so I believe I am doing something right. I also get in about 65g of protein. Any suggestions out there for me??? Thanks in advance!! — Tammy K. (posted on October 9, 2001)

It's great that you're able to tolerate different foods. What are your dr's
guidelines? Some allow solids earlier and some later. I started soft foods
at 2 weeks and moved gradually to solids by 6 weeks. Just remember that
your insides are still traumatized by the surgery even if you feel great.
You and your doctor have to decide what the risks are with your particular
surgery and whether it is worth it to start solids this early. Good luck to
you!

My doc. gives solid food right after surgery. He doesn't believe
in"mush" diets. He says there's no nutrtional value
in mashed potatoes and jello. So he's a protein man. Do
what your doc says. But it's ok in my book.

The reason they gave us at Davis not to rush the food stages post-op is
this: Even tho you may not have external negative reactions to eating
"regular" foods, the abrasive/tough/bulk of it irritates the
internal incision sites that are still healing, which creates scar tissue.
Scar tissue leads to strictures (narrowing of the opening to the pouch),
and plenty of other problems. So even though you may feel fine and be able
to "tolerate" advanced foods early, be aware that you may be
risking other complications later on.
