Question:
I bruise very easily now. Could this be a vitamin deficiency?
I am a year post op from open Rny. I seem to bruise very easily now. Is it maybe caused by a deficiency or is it cause I don't have near as much padding as I used to? My doctor does bloodwork every couple of moths and I have always had normal levels. But would it be a deficiency in something she is not checking? I am on nata chew pre natal vitamins and have been since I was a few weeks post op. Any thoughts would be appreciated! — Paula G. (posted on June 15, 2001)

I am preop and bruise easily. My doctor has not given me a reason why. I do
know this appears to be a heredity factor for me as my mother had and my
sister has the same problem. If I barely bump myself I bruise. I am anxious
to hear what others have to say about bruising pre and post op. Can this
make open RNY more risky for me?

After my RNY, I noticed that I was developing lots of bruises, especially
on my legs, that weren't associated with any injuries that I could recall.
As a nurse, I was convinced that something must be wrong with my Vitamin K
metabolism, but when I asked my surgeon about the bruising he told me to
increase my Vitamin C and that it should take care of it. My PCP did some
labs to check out bleeding and clotting times, and they were within normal
limits. I bought some generic vitamin C tablets, started taking one tablet
twice a day in addition to my regular multivitamin, and strangely enough
the bruising stopped. I can't explain the rationale at all, but it worked
for me. Gpod luck!

I've been iron deficient many times through my life and I bruised very
easily. Ask him about your iron levels...

I use to bruise very, very easily. One day, a very knowledgeable
nutritionist advised me to purchase some BIO-FLAVORNOIDS. It worked very
well.
