Question:
Can insurance companies change their policy during the benefit year?

I was pre-approved for surgery on 1/19 but had to postpone due to illness. I have heard that NC Teachers and State Employees have changed their policy denying coverage for WLS. Can they do this?    — Seans M. (posted on March 11, 2001)

Is it possible for you to call them and see if they have you "grandfathered"? That way, even if they have changed their policy, they did promise you, and hopefully they'll stick to their previous commitment.

I know that if your company renewed their policy during that time it is possible that a new certificate of coverage was introduced with different benefits and exclusions. My company renewed with UHC in Novemember at which time a different certificate of coverage went into effect. Unfortunately, WLS is excluded under that certificate. I am fighting them on trying to get grandfathered under the old certificate. Hope this helps. Best of luck. John
