Question:
Why are some post op diets different?

After reading some testimonies (concerning the open rny) I have seen that some people are already on full fledge foods. My doctor said I can't get back on foods until six weeks. I mean I had my surgery on sept 26, and I am still on full liquids. I want food too. I just want to know, why are some folks eating and I am not. — Angela A. (posted on October 9, 2000)

Hi, Angela! It's your Angel, here! Glad to see you back at your computer and logging on to AMOS.

Each post-op diet is as different as every surgeon is as different as every procedure is as different as every wls patient. I ate solid food before I ever left the hospital. My best advice is to follow your surgeon's plan for you. Keep up the good work!

Angela, I had my surgery at BTC also. The way it was explained to me, my stoma is about the size of an M&M. During the first weeks after surgery the area around the stoma may be inflamed and the stoma may be dilated. By waiting longer to move to solid food, we give our stoma a chance to heal. Also, I have found that the liquid diet helped me focus on getting my fluids. Once I added solid food I had to work more to get the fluids.

The diets are different because the surgeons are different. My sister and I have different surgeons, we will have different post-op orders. This includes diets/ meal suggestions. Follow your surgeons suggestions because he is going with what has worked best for his patients. I can understand your frustration but the key to protecting your pouch is listening to your doctor. Glad to see you back...

Angela, I just wanted to say that a great web site that my doctor recommended can be found at "www.sabariatric.com". It is not his web site, but it has great information about diet and the procedure and what to expect. I agree that you must follow whatever guidelines your surgeon gives you...and maybe the web site will help you to do that.

I was put on yogurts, cream of wheat, pureed (spelling?) peaches, etc. on the 3rd day after surgery. Ten days after surgery (while still in the hospital - developed pneumonia) they started me on a soft diet, my first meal was at lunch time and they brought me a roast beef sandwich. IT TASTED SO GOOD!!!!!!!!! Even though I could only eat 3 VERY small bites. It was great!! I came home on day 12, was was able to eat anything I wanted as long as I took small bites and chewed it was until it was almost liquid. Hope you get to eat real food real soon!! Sincerely, Linda F. Surgery Dates: June 18, 1999 & Aug. 14, 1999 (Had a leak with the first surgery) Beginning weight 298 Todays weight 185
