Hi. My name is Kathy Kujawa. I had gastric bypass surgery in Oct. of
1998. I am 9 months post op. My husband and I do not have any children so
one of the first questions I asked my surgeon at my initial consultation
is if I would be able to have children after the surgery. He said that yes
I could have children one year after surgery. And he has one patient that
had the surgery and did end up having a child and she got pregnant 10
months after her surgery. Everything went well, the baby is doing fine and
there were no complications. Good luck.

Yes you can have children. They want you to wait a year after surgery
though. Many have been able to have children after surgery (1 year later)
when they couldn't before. :) Good luck.

YES!!! you can have children after RNY adn VBG. I chose VBG becaue i
intiended to have childrena dn didn't want to have mal-absorption problems
during pregnancy. However, many RNY people have very successful pregnancies
and very healthy babies. YOu do require a little extra monitoring and are
usually considered high risk, but they go on to deliver wonderful babies.
Good Luck!!

Yes. Having children is not recommended doing the first year afther
surgery, due to rapid weight loss. However, after that it is OK.

I have heard that you can have children after the surgery. But, it is the
common to wait at least a year. I have also heard that you should make
sure that your obgyn be informed of the surgery, and be sure that you are
taking all of your vitamins and minerals. I have heard from many people
that have said that they have had normal births after rny.
good luck.

I had a singleton birth 6 years after wls and a multiple birth 71/2 years
after surgery. All three of my boys are healthy with no medical issues. I
did need to make sure to take my vitamins during prenancy plus others. If
you plan to breastfeed, make sure you speak to a health professional in
regards to taking more calcium/magnesium/iron.

I asked this question for a lady that was at the first meeting I had with
the surgeon (the first part was open and several were in the room). He
said that it was very easy to get pregnant after the surgery. Why? Many
overweight women have not had periods for some time due to their weight and
its affects. Now, all the sudden they lose weight and start ovulating,
having periods, etc. Also, your self-esteem goes up and you may begin
feeling a whole lot friskier than ever before, having more energy, being
interested in your partner, sex, etc. and physically able to do the deed
again. Then, your partner may find you more attractive than ever before!
Additionally you put those two plus variables together and add the fact
that many of us have not been on any birth control, none is around the
house, nor is any built up in our systems (such as required with oral
contraceptives). All of this = pregnancy chance a sky-rocketing!!
Anyway the doctor said it was a BAD idea and risky to try and have children
for one year after the surgery. Personally, I think it would be dumb to
have have a child until the entire weight loss was completed. I wouldn't
want to go through all the WLS, after effects, and lose down to 20% of my
ideal weight just to start gaining back again due to the fetus. This could
"play" a lot of games with one's mind. I think after the surgery
you have to get to know yourself totally again. I feel like it is a chance
to have a honeymoon and get to know your spouse/mate all over again. Of
course, I already have a child/children.
Lots of things could happen before a year is up. Complications can occur,
weight loss will really decrease, your food intake and ability to consume
it, etc. so you could really hurt your own intake and your babys. I can't
imagine dealing with your meals from WLS PLUS naseau and heartburn from
pregnancy. YUCK
Hope this helps.
