Of the three, the Fobi pouch is the most radical, and the one I know least
about (even though I saw Dr. Fobi on Roseanne). The RNY is a gastric
bypass. A pouch is created and the stomach is bypassed--the small
intestine is connected to the pouch, and the stomach is re-connected to the
small intestine (after some of it is bypassed). Pictures really help. The
gastric juices pour into the small intestine and meet the food, which by
passes the stomach through the bypassed part of the intestine. I know this
is confusing, but in essence the two parts of the small intesting form a Y
(hence Roux eN Y). One part of Y connected to small pouch, the other part
connected to bottom of stomach, and the food meets gastric juices where
they join, and continue the digestive process. Sheesh!
In the VBG, the stomach is not bypassed. A pouch is created, and a portion
is banded, so that only a small amount of food can be consumed. Then the
food passes slowly through the band, and is digested in the stomach. Of
the three, this procedure is the least successful, to my understanding (I
had the VBG a number of years ago, and am now going to have the RNY).

I too had a VBG, about 10 years ago...I've been gaining weight the past few
years...Does anyone know any Drs. in the Fresno Ca. area who will do a LAP
RNY revision?
