Question:
I took Motrin for 3 weeks before hearing it could dissolve sutures.
Could this have harmed my new pouch. I used 325mg and took it with meals. I am 3 months out and have used it for joint pain for the past 3 weeks. I called my Dr. and was told I should have taken it with an antacid. Wish I had known this before. Anyone had this come up? — Brenda T. (posted on April 14, 2004)

I was told by my surgeon that the problem with Motrin was that if the pill
sits in your pouch it can cause ulcers. If you took it either crushed
(best way) or at least with food and you haven't had a problem you should
be ok. I'd try it crushed in a little bit of apple sauce so it doesn't
have the opportunity to cause an ulcer. The most common spot for this to
happen is where the pouch empties into your intestines. Good luck!!

I took a teaspoon of childrens motrin about 7 weeks post op for ankle pain
which turned out to be gout and ended up with 2 bleeding ulcers. I would
stop all together. Good luck

I am a nurse and I have NEVER heard that motrin dissolves sutures. it is a
frequently used post op pain reliever. I beleive you were misinformed.
Motrin is not recommended for gastric bypass patients due to the ulcer
causing properties.

Just goes to illustrate that every doc is different. Mine forgot to send
my scrip for pain pills home with me. When I called him, he said just take
Motrin. I have taken Motrin occasionally since 5 days post-op and had no
problems.
