Question:
How long for swelling in abdomen to go away?
I had an Open RNY on November 19, 2003. My abdomen is still really swollen around the incision area. It almost looks like I am 6 months pregnant! lol How long does it take for the swelling to go away and is there anything I can do to speed it up? — y0maria (posted on December 12, 2003)

I had Open RNY on November 3rd and my abdomen is still really swollen too.
I was thinking the same thing about being or "looking" 6 months
pregnant today~LOL. I hope you get some answers to you post, I'll be
curious as to how long this lasts as well.
Take care!

Hey Mary =)
I didn't have Open, I had LAP, but just so you know, my abdomen was swollen
several weeks--over a month, maybe a month and a half.
I think swelling is pretty normal whether open or LAP considering the way
the surgeon sliced and diced your abdomen! This isn't a paper cut healing
here, it's a large incision and lots of torn tissue on the inside. Give it
time :)
Good luck!

I had an open RNY on June 25 and I'm still swollen. Just kidding!!!
Seriously, it took about 4 to 6 weeks before I really noticed abdominal
swelling to go down. The weight loss was there but the swelling kept me
from being able to see it. It also took about that long before I felt
comfortable in jeans. As far as the incision area there is still a ridge
but that will take time as the scar tissue breaks down and fades away. It
isn't noticeable to anyone other than me, so don't worry. It will all be
fine!
