Question:
Feel Like I've Been Hit in the Gut

I have a hiatal (sp) hernia and since surgery it hasn't bothered me at all. Recently though I feel like I've been hit in the guy causing great pain with a little nausea. Could this be the hiatal hernia? Has anyone else experienced this since surgery? I watch my fat/sugar/caffeine intake but right now, feel miserable.    — Deanna C. (posted on September 29, 2003)

Hi, your Hiatal Hernia, should have been resolved with this surgery. Is your food going down when you eat? Are you eating too fast or too large a bites? I would say it is not from the HH. I would call my surgeon. How far out are you from surgery? Have you ever had a stricture?

I also had a hard cramp that felt like I got kicked in the stomach. It made no difference if I had eaten or not. I went to my surgeon and he put me on clear liquids for 7 days and started me on nexium. So far all is well!

Prior to surgery, I had a moderately sized hiatle hernia and reflux. I've been having problems with nausea, stomach pain and vomiting and had an upper GI to find that I still have the hiatle hernia and reflux. I too was under the impression that with surgery these things go away but that is obviously not the case! I didn't even know that I had reflux anymore because it doesn't come up to my throat like it used to. The doctor started me on Nexium for the reflux and Reglan to help my stomach empty. I do believe there has been some relief but it's still too soon to tell. Good luck!

Yes, as a matter of fact I just went to the doctor's today. I explained that I had acid reflux/GERD prior to surgery and those same symptoms are back--the burning in the stomach, your food feels like it's not moving out of your stomach, nausea and dry heaves. My doctor prescribed Protonix for the acid and Reglan to help my food move through the way its supposed to.

Don't rule out the gall bladder. That is what I am going through now, nausea, tightness in my throat, stomach, intestines, dry heaves....it's horrible. The sooner you get it checked the sooner you will have relief. Good Luck to you.
