Question:
Dying to eat something other than liquids (FLAVOR)
I am 10 days post-op and I am dying for something to put into my mouth other than jello, juice and water. I have handled everything well up to now with no complications. Is there anything that I can eat that has some real flavor like mashed potatoes, etc. HELP! I am starting to crash and fear I will start cheating and eating things I should not be eating because of these cravings.. — Susan S. (posted on September 14, 2003)

i have eaten only what my doctor has given the ok for. by the start of the
second week i had eaten fat free refried bean and cheese, grits, and
anything low fat that i could put in a blender. just don't forget to
measure 1/2 cup at each meal.

@ around 10Post I tried mashed potatoes and had no problem. I used instant
and made them a little more runny than normal. Not something you want to
get hooked on due to the carbs.

I took a can of stewed tomatoes, a can of green beans , and a can of beef
broth and mixed them in a blender. I microwaved it for a couple of minutes
and added shredded cheese and melted it. It tasted just like a liquid
chili and was very good!

Since each surgeon is so specific on what they want their patients to eat
post-op, I highly recommend you contact his office or the dietitian you are
working with. They should be able to give you lots of good ideas too.
UCLA allows tea, water, clear broth, bouillon, juice (apple, cranberry,
grape), shorbet/sherbert, sugar free gelatin. For added flavor you could
put sf syrups in water or tea. Irish creme SF syrup is wonderful in hot
tea. Hope it gets easier for you. I'll be in your shoes in 59 days (not
that I am counting ... LOL)

Get a can of Healthy Choice Chicken Noodle Soup and blenderize it. Put a
little black pepper and maybe a touch of garlic powder in it and heat it a
little. At that stage, for me that was yummy. Try some sugar free
popsicles. I like the Popsicle brand-name the best because the flavor is
the strongest.

If you're on liquids go to a good restaurant and order (take out) their
best soup. Tell them you only want the broth and you can strain it better
when you get it home.

My advice would be to strictly adhere to your doctor's instructions.
Forget what others tell you they did. If you try to eat something BEFORE
you are ready (tummy is still healing), I guarantee you won't want to eat
it again. You will cross it off your "lust" list. Give your
tummy time to heal. I know it's rough going in the beginning. There is SO
much head hunger going on. Learn to tell the difference. It gets so much
easier later when the tummy heals. Good luck to you and hang in there.

during my liquid phase, my Dr. allowed cream of wheat. i would pre-make it
and then take my 2 oz and spread it on a paper plate and microwave for
about 11 seconds. Made it have a little more texture. A couple of times I
sprinkled about 1/4 teaspoon of parmesan cheese on top. As the others have
said...don't go ahead of what your surgeon allows. Someone recommended
blendarizing chicken noodle soup. My nutritionist said that even
blendarizing the pasta in a soup was a definite no no. Make sure you do
what YOUR surgeon/nutritionist advise.

I bought a can of Sour Cream and Onion Pringles. I licked the spices off
the chips and gave the remainder to my dogs. My husband made fun of me. My
dogs loved me and I satisfied my craving. LOL!

My only concern about Sondra's choices is that sour cream and pringles is
part of the old life, pre-op. You're so soon into the Losing Side: try try
try to stay on your plan, talk with your dietician, work with clear broths,
pureed beans, yogurt, anything non-fat...good luck!!!

Hon, I know exactly how you feel! I was fine the first week or so - no
cravings for "the bad stuff". Then suddenly, around day 8 or so,
I was about to croak to eat something that had some actual TASTE! I was
staying with my folks (my mom is a nurse) the first 9 days out, and they
had a can of those new Lays Pringles rip-offs. I opened the can, took one
out, licked the salt off both sides, then let the chip practically dissolve
in my mouth. I was still afraid of hurting my new tummy, though, so I
chewed it very well, spit it into a napkin, and threw it away! Hey -
whatever works! *l*
