Question:
Has anyone else besides me....
Was told by my doctor to add more carbs to my diet to stay fuller longer. I have been eating 1/2 sanwhich. But yesterday I ate a whole tuna fish sandwhich and didn't have any problems with it. It took me about 20 minutes to finish it off. Was wondering if anyone else can polish off a whole sand. at 6 months out? — Lisa B. A. (posted on June 25, 2003)

I possibly could (I'm almost 5 months) - but it would have to be a small
sandwhich with nothing extra on it, and I'd have to be REALLY hungry...

With 20 minutes, I think quite a few could polish off a whole thin
sandwich. Its interesting though that the doc has said to add carbs to
stay fuller longer. I would think a better filler would be protein, like
more meat in the 1/2 sandwich. Too many carbs will slow down the weight
loss, so just be careful to just add the good carbs and not the bad ones
(whole wheat bread and not white bread on the sandwich).

How odd! It's a very well-known fact of nutrition that PROTEIN is what
helps us feel full longer. Extra carbs beget more carbs, and will make you
feel hungrier faster. Carbs are not the way to go to feel fuller longer.

I had no problem eating a small 4" sub from Wawa convenience store
when I was 5 months post...I had no problem eating a whole homemade
sandwich at 6 months(the monsters at restraunts were/are another
story...usually two meals). As far as carbs go, eating healthy whole grain
breads is A-OK...carbs get a bad bash from many posties, but I know if I go
too low with them I end up going nutso and eating way too many of the wrong
ones in the long run. If I eat healthy carb foods (low fat/whole grain) and
moderate low fat protein I stay satisfied wayyyy longer than when I eat low
carbs/high protein. Just my 2 cents. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -150

At 11 months out I still can't eat a whole sandwich, but I load mine up
heavy with meat/cheese/lettuce so that's probably why. I find carbs to be
more filling initially, but find that proteins (dense ones) stick with me
longer - if that makes any sense.

I don't do sandwiches - bread kills me and makes me dump every time. I do
salads. If you can compare salads to sandwiches you could say I can eat a
little more than a cup of salad - less if there is meat in it. Usually I
make about 3/4 cup salad mix with 1 or 2 oz of meat. No crackers and very
little dressing. I tried eating a couple of croutons one day but dumped
after the second one.

I can eat 1/4 of a italian sub, thats the only sandwich i eat and thats
very occasionally, i am 5 months out (had surgery jan 27th). I dont eat
tuna on bread, i eat it on reduced fat ritz crackers. I eat 5 crackers and
1/3 prepared can of tuna with light mayo. It fills me up for quite a
while. I dont know if I eat more then others but I realize that I eat as
much as my "normal" not over weight mother inlaw and sister
inlaw. Its so neat to see that I eat as much as them and am full and that
I'm not over eating for once in my life. Dont worry about if this is too
much or that is too much, just try to make your stuff nutritional and eat
what satisfies you but not over eat KWIM?
Good luck now.
