Question:
Does anyone know the amount generally bypassed by BTC?
I'm curious as to how much was bypassed with my surgery. Reading through my surgical notes and I still can't figure it out. — scottiemaam O. (posted on June 6, 2003)

I read on their website that it is 150cm in the small intestine. My
question is that I wonder if they actually cut distally enough. There are
many patients, (including myself) who are almost 2 years out and have
stopped losing a while back but need to lose more weight. This usually
happens when the doctor doesn't cut distally enough on the intestine. My
doctor in Texas at the BTC is leaving this fall, and that makes me wonder
even more what is going on! Write me if you wish and I'll discuss it more
with you!

150cm is pretty standard for most surgeons when operating on someone who
has a lot to lose. It typically has been quite sucessful if people work
the program to the max. There are not a lot of RNY's out there with a
bypass of more than 150cm as that seems to be the "safe" zone
that most go by and heck even some insurances don't want to pay for that
long as they feel it is experimental. There are longer and shorter
bypasses but the most common is the 150cm. From what I have heard the
BTC's do only the 150 and do not alter it for someone who needs to lose
like 100-150 lbs. But I could be wrong. Just stating what I have heard.
