Question:
I WANT TO GET PREGNANT, SHOULD I BE WORRIED ??

I'm 26, married for 2 years, and now considering having WLS. I have plans to start a beautiful family with my husband soon. But i'm afraid that WLS will interfere with my pregnancies. Will i be able to get pregnant? Will my baby suffer malnutrition if i opt for RNY? Can i deliver without C-section? How long do i have to wait before getting pregnant. PLEASE HELP !!! I'm particularly interested in hearing from ladies who have gotten pregnant after surgery, and what were their results? THANK YO SOOOOO MUCH IN ADVANCE !!!!    — Laura R. (posted on May 5, 2003)

Hi! You can get pregnant after weight loss surgery. As a matter of fact most woman are more fertile due to the weightloss. You can have a natural delivery.Doctors recommend waiting 2 years after surgery to have a baby.

Hey Laura! We have tried to get pregnant again for 2 years. This was one of the reasons I decided to go through with the surgery. Yes, you can get pg, have a healthy pregnancy and deliver natural. My doctor told me to wait 1-2 years before we do start again. I just had surgery on April 16 and by this time next Spring, we will begin trying again.

This question was raised to my surgeon at our support group meeting last week and he also advised waiting a good 1-1 1/2 years after WLS before getting pregnant-the reason why is that they want your food intake to stabilize (enough calories for you and baby). There are some who get pregnant shortly after WLS, before the doc advised, and they then have to go to high risk OB/GYN docs to monitor their progress, but they still have healthy babies. There is an OSSG-pregnancy group at yahoo groups that you could post questions.

~~ HI LAURA! ~~ Actually, I have a very good friend I met through the internet, who has had a child after WLS and is on baby number two! Her website is FANTASTIC and she documents EVERYTHING to help people considering WLS and pregnancy afterwards. Here's her site: http://hometown.aol.com/mommy4alex/journey.html She's a doll and if you e-mail her, she'll definately e-mail ya back! Good Luck and Happy Baby Making!!! ;o)
