Question:
I have a GI inital visit today, my question is... what is GI testing and what should
I expect since I have never heard of this before. — Angelic73 (posted on January 24, 2003)

Are you talking about having a upper GI series. If you are, you are not
allowed to eat after midnight. You go to the radiology dept. of the
hospital. There you drink this crystallized liquid (kind of like
alka-seltzer). That makes gas in your stomach to blow it up and make it so
they can see things better. Then they put you in this machine. It is like
an upright table. They give you this barium to drink (thick as a milkshake
and tastes like absolute s%#t. Then the table goes done so your in a lying
prone position. All the while they are taking pictures of the way the
barium flows through your tummy and small intestine. It takes about 20
minutes and it's really not bad at all.
