Question:
I read a post a while back about surgeons not doing your operation
Is it true if you gain weight prior to your operation they may not let you do it? I am concerned because I think I may be up 5-10 ilbs since my initial consultation. — Amy L. (posted on January 21, 2003)

Hi there! I think different surgeons have different requirements. The
surgeon I had required a 10% weight loss prior to surgery & if you
hadn't lost that by the day of surgery she would cancel you. I know that
my surgeon required the loss so that her patients could shrink their livers
so that she could try & do the surgery Lap...Also, I think she wanted
to see how dedicated you were to losing weight. My surgeon was very
upfront about this though...She told me at my first consult that I would be
required to lose 10% (and actually my insurance warned me as well). I
would check with your surgeon's office to find out what his/her
requirements are. Take care!

All docs are different and frankly I think it is so stupid to ask anyone to
lose weight prior to surgery, if you could do it on your own in the first
place why the heck would you be having surgery? I gained 20 pounds in less
than a month prior to surgery, I just kept having "Last Meals"
Best of Luck.

My surgeon just simply said that if you gain weight from your consult to
surgery day she would cancel. No requirement of losing a certain amount or
even losing at all, just not to gain any weight. She did say anything you
could lose beforehand would only help you and her and that was all she
said. I don't think your surgeon would flat out cancel without ever telling
you that you needed to not gain. They usually tell you upfront what is
expected of you. Good Luck.
