Question:
What can I do for frequent gas and Bowel movements??

Hi I have read many posts on Bowel Problems and I am realy hoping that I will Lick this problem (so to speak)I am 3 1/2 months post op and I get the most awful abdominal cramps, sometimes followed by gas sometimes by a loose or soft stool , and yes mega smelly.I have had this since surgery and I would go 4-5 times in the morning before work and then be ok however it seems the last couple of weeks I have gone 4-5 times before work and then can go from 0-10 more times a day.It gets really embarrasing at work especially if I am just getting ready to put in an intravenous and then have to stop and run to the BR. I have seen my GP he has tried me on antispasmodics which help some but not for long. He also put me on cleasr fluids for about 4 days but the abdominal symptoms did not get any better. I think I know why now tho after reading these posts, clear fluids include lots of simple sugars this could make the symptoms worse right??? I have tried charcoal capsules too . So please please if anyone has any advice I will be for ever in your debt.... I am nearly bankrupt coz of my T.P. costs LOL anyway happy trails and thanks for the advice. Hi- I have major gas pains, bloating, and diarhea. I take 9 lomotil a day, just so I don't have 20 BM's a day. I also take paragoric, which works wonders on the diarhea and bloating. For the odor, I take Flagil, and Neomiacin. They kill the bacteria in the intestine, so I don't stink up my whole city!!. Good Luck --

Have you talked with your surgeon about this? Sometimes they have more insight than PCPs.

Are you drinking milk? That sounds exactly as my pre-op lactose intolerance. Sudden cramping, violent explosion, no warning. After my distal RNY, I occasionally had a few bouts, but it was other hidden sugars. I still do no milk, no sugar.

I, too, had the DS and had frequent BMs throughout the day early in my post-op experience. As time goes no, however, the frequency will decrease as your body adapts to its new plumbing. I'm now 13 months out and usually just have 1 or 2 bms in the morning, unless I eat something like icecream (which still gives me diarrhea). By the time you are six or seven months out, you should notice a definite change in frequency and should again be able to start restocking your toilet paper supply (*smile*). Try avoiding dairy products for a week or two to see if your diarrhea goes away--you might be lactose intolerant. Then slowly begin to incorporate them again as tolerated. Best wishes in your WLS journey.

I had open RNY 11-12-01 and I have this same problem. I take about 15-20 pills a day to try to control this problem (about 10 Lomotil, Colestid up to 4 times a day,and Levison 3 times a day) They do help but I still go very frequently and the smell is ungodly. I hate to have to go in public, it is so bad:( If you figure anything out PLEASE forward it on because my surgeon is running out of things to try and I am desperate.

Stay away from dairy products. I never had a problem with dairy items until I was post-op. Some people can't eat chocolate and some of us can't use dairy.

I had RNY, so I dont know if my experience can compare. But I did notice that about the time the weight loss slows, so does this problem. By the time I got real close to goal... this issue was non existant. My mom had wls a long time ago and suffered with this for YEARS. When I started researching this option for myself, she contacted one of the surgeons for a 'check up' and explained this problem to them. The surgeon suggested she take metamusil every day. She has not had a problem since. Worth a shot.
