Question:
One week post op and despite flossing and brushing my breath smells, will this go away
after my clear liquid phase? I start full liquids tomorrow. — Karen S. (posted on June 13, 2002)

I, too, had that problem during my "liquids-only phase". Even
though I was constantly drinking, my mouth was always dry & pastey. I
heard from others that they had the same problem while on liquids. Now
after being able to eat, things are back to normal as far as that is
concerned. It seems that you're producing more saliva when you eat and
that helps to "flush" your mouth. It will get better. Good
luck!

My yuck mouth and breath happened since eating solids, not the liquid
phase. Last week when the nurse did her one month post-op follow up with
me and I told her about it, she said it is because I am in ketosis (when
the body has no glucose for fuel, the cells begin burning fat instead of
muscle). It might take a few weeks (give or take), but yes it will go
away.

I know this sounds gross but Keep the bad breath invest in mints and gum...
You body is in Ketosis and burning fat for energy. I know you do not think
so but your body is doing what it needs to and the bad breath is something
we all go through. I never leave home without suger free mints or the
listerine paper that disolves in your mouth. Good Luck, I am 4.5 months
post op now.

It's just the ketosis kicking in. Make sure you use a tongue cleaner when
you brush your teeth that also help. in adition to the other stuff like
brushing, flossing and antibacterial agents like Oral-B Rinse. Alll this
will Pass Until you have another big massive weight loss trip. Adrienne 14
months post op--been ther done that!
