Question:
4 wks PO; I'm constantly nauseous, not getting in water/protein...Help!

I'm getting in about 40 oz of water and protein from my meals but not supplements as I haven't been able to tolerate any of them. I'm constantly nauseous, have lost 20# as of 3 wks and don't see the scales moving much. Our Doc has us on food as of 1 wk but I'm not tolerating much of it and some gets stuck. Any suggestions. I'm so exhausted all of the time.    — AJC750 (posted on May 3, 2002)

You need to tell you doctor..the same thing happened to me and I came very closet to being hospitalized for dehydration. He can give you something for it.Mine gave me ZOFRAN 4mg..It is very strong..usually given to cancer patients, but it worked very quickly. Also, I was on liquids for 4 weeks, then Pureed..then solids...that is when it happened to me, I had to go back to pureed to help also...Hope it helps

Have you been scoped to see if all is in order in your pouch? If your stoma is closed or closing or something else is not perfect, it's fairly easy to fix if you fix it SOON, before you run into problems. This is one of those "call your doc" things.

I too was nauseous from months 1 to 4. You just have to keep sipping water and make yourself eat some. I had to be hospitalized for dehydration for not drinking enough. Don't worry about the weight loss now. Your body is hanging on to every calorie it's getting because it's afraid it's going to starve. It will come off. I also started running a temp and got on an antibiotic. About four days after getting on the antibiotic, the nausea started to subside. Maybe you have a little infection or need to be scoped. Talk to your doctor. There is hope. I felt absolutely miserable for four months and then all of a sudden I felt better. I'm now 1 year post op, down 136 pounds!

Two comments: 1) my docotor had told me that not getting enough protein in WIll make you feel nauseous. His advice was to go for the protein first and foremost, then the water then the rest of the food (pureed for a month to help it be digested more easily) 2)I also was told that if there is going to be a problem with stomal stenosis (the closing up of the new opeing to your intestine) it will happen right around 4 weeks. The primary symptoms are vomiting and not being able to progress from liquids and pureed to soft foods. This is terribly important to get looked at right away if this is what you suspect! Good luck!!
