Question:
Ranch Dressing? Crisco? Mayo?
My doc says these are things we can't have after surgery. Anyone have problems eating them after surgery? I love salad, but don't know if I would like it plain and don't like other dressings. I only use about 2 tblspns on a BIG salad. I use mayo sparingly and my mom uses crisco and refuses to use anything else. Even when frying chicken. I can't beleive I won't be able to peel the skin off her chicken and eat a piece. Does it cause dumping or is it just not good for us to eat afterward? — Patricia H. (posted on April 30, 2002)

HI PATRICIA
MY HUSBAND AND I ARE BOTH MICRO POUCH POSTIES, WE DO EAT BUTTER, MAYO, AND
RANCH, WE HAVE NEVER HAD ANY ADVERSE REACTIONS TO IT, AS A MATTER OF FACT
WHEN I ASKED DR. WOOD IF I SHOULD EAT REG. OR FAT FREE PRODUCTS HE SAID IF
YOU ARE GOING TO EAT SALAD DRESSINGS, BUTTERS ETC. ONLY USE THE REAL
THING, SO WE DO, IN MODERATION OF COURSE!! NO PROBLEM!!
HOPE THIS HELPS! BECKY

I eat all of the above! The only thing that makes me "dump" is
too much fat. If I eat too much fat, I am usually in the bathroom the next
day. And I am not happy. I had gastric bypass 10 months ago. Once you are
out of surgery a while, I would try small amounts of things, to see how
your body reacts. Just my humble opinion.

OK Here's the bad guy =) I have to tell you, I never eat anything full fat
when there is an edible alternative choice. I eat lite mayo, Just 2 Good
dressings, FF yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, wheat breads, ff/sf puddings
and jello, etc. I CAN eat many of the regular stuff without dumping but I
choose not to. It all got me into trouble in the first place. That
doesn't mean I never eat "poor" choices, I just limit it and I
certainly don't bring that stuff in my house. The alternatives that I've
listed here are good. At least I like them. I also alternate between
light cheese (2%) and fat free, depending upon what I am eating.
Somethings are great with ff, somethings need more of the "real
thing". What you are going to dump on, I can't tell you, neither can
the doctor. We all have different tolerances. I'll tell you this though:
I was more than willing to get rid of it all for a thin body. No doubt
about that. I'd do it all over again if I needed to. I gave up fried
everything and I don't miss them at all. I now have new favorite dishes
that are healthier for me.

Since you are talking about dumping, I assume you will have the RNY. I am
right at a year out from lap RNY and I have never had a problem with FAT
but fried foods do make me feel very, very bad. I can eat maybe one
drumstick of fried chicken now, but for the first 10 months just the
thought of fried chicken was enough to turn me off. I can eat the tar out
of some buffalo wings, tho! (OK. I only eat like 3 or 4 LOL) I do eat mayo
and salad dressing in moderation, but find that I don't use as much as I
used to. In fact, I often just sprinkle chunks of gorgonzola or blue cheese
on a salad instead of using prepared dressings. I don't eat sandwiches very
often, either, usually just meat and cheese with fruit, sometimes with
crackers. It is not that I am watching fat--I only keep track of
protein--but that I just don't really care for that stuff as much anymore.
I did have a craving for chips and dip last week and made a seven-layer
mexican dip with lots of ground beef, beans, and cheese. It was great! Hope
this helps.

I'm like Cheri. I'm a year out and have no taste for fried foods. Salad
dressings I can tolerate, but I can't drench my salad with them anymore.
Plus, my sandwiches these days are sans bread, too. They usually consist of
meat, cheese and maybe some crackers. I am to a point where I don't have a
taste for chicken, even!

I prefer the real thing over FF. FF - high sugar & I dont' go there.
I'm not big into fried foods, never was, though, so no big deal. I always
took the skin off. (ewww) I avoid milk & sugar. That's it. The other
stuff is fair game.
