Question:
What does one say to why don't diets work for you? Does this mean that I am weak ?
Am I without will when it comes to food? People ask me why I can't stick to a healthy eating plan and lose the weight that way.I have lost lots of weight only to gain it back, plus some. But I don't really know why. Anyone have any insight into this? — Karen S. (posted on March 12, 2002)

I think the person who had the answer to this question would be a
billionaire. Why can some people eat then leave food alone and never
struggle with weight while others of use constantly struggle? I don't know,
and the people asking you the question don't know either. The diet industry
wouldn't be a 45 million dollar a year cash cow and 60% of american women
wouldn't be on a diet at any given time if we knew the answer to this
question. good luck

Dieting is a behavior. Morbid obesity is a physical (fatal) disease.
Sometimes you can treat a disease with behavior modification, but you can
never cure it. WLS doesn't cure it, either, but it IS a more effective
treatment. And it's OK, as you & I aren't the only ones with this
delusion, as the Surgeon General of the US & the NIH also are under the
same one! And I strongly suspect there's more than one person on this site
who would agree with that. Dieting is an exercise in will power, but it
has nothing to do with permanent wt loss, I fear.

This is just my opinion, but I believe morbidly obese individuals have a
"satiety disorder" in that we don't become satisfied as easily as
thin people to. WLS cures this disorder and gives us a great tool to lose
the weight!
