Question:
Is my mom still a candidate for the surgery?
My mom is 64, has diabetes and had a quad heart bypass three years ago. I am in the early stages of "going for it" - have a consult scheduled. She wants to do it to but doesn't think she is a candidate - is she? — Robin S. (posted on February 16, 2002)

I would think surgery would help both her conditions, but perhaps she
should research and then visit the doctor? Maybe you could bring it up
with your surgeon? Personally, from what you said, I would think that she
would benefit from surgery, but her doctors would check her out pretty
thoroughly before recommending it. Good luck to her! Nina in Maine (67
years; surgery 2/21/02)

The information I gathered was this. Insurance wise, many policies that
cover wls cut off at age 50.
Surgeon wise, it varies whether they believe the patient can withstand the
procedure and the outcome is worth the risks. I think the bigger struggle
would be with insurance companies. I just had mine done. I am 49...just
made it under the wire for my insurance company.

I am 65 years old. I thought I was to old. I have Diabetes, bilateral knee
replacements and hypertension. I found a doctor in New Jersey that does the
surgery for people my age and older. Look around and ask I am sure you
will find come one, just make sure they are a good choice.
