Question:
I just found out my surgeon now only does VBG and don't know if it's for me...

I have the same surgeon my mom had and thought she had a RNY but was wrong. I guess through all my research I just assumed I would have an RNY. My mom is very happy with her success and so am I. I've known about people who decided which one to have but whether or not the eat large amounts or alot of sweets. Well i eat it all and in large amounts, I would be happy with 3 cupcakes or 2 plates of spaghetti. I'm open to either one I'm just having a hard time changing my mind frame from RNY to VBG. I'm pretty sure this will be the only choice of a surgeon I have and he's really the one i want but i just don't know. I would like some input from people with both surgerys and some advice. thanks P.S. My boyfriend aske me to marry him yesterday and i accepted!!!! yeah!!!!    — LaKeAffy (posted on February 16, 2002)

You will get a lot of info here about RNY. You will get a lot of very innacurate info about VBG. Come join the VBG group of hundreds of successful VBG'ers at the www.yahoogroups.com group to get educated and accurate info about VBG! (my open VBG was 8 months and 5 days ago, and I have, as of today, lost 126.5 pounds!!)

Not true Cathy J.!! It's nice to invite folks to your yahoo group but don't bash this site for being inaccurate! Now, that being said, Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. And congratulations for doing research on both surgeries. I had an open RNY. I could have had VBG but opted for RNY for several reasons. I did not feel like MY weight loss surgery would be as successful using VBG because I had heard and read that VBG did not restrict your intake as effectively as RNY. I also believe that sugar will not cause you to dump with VBG. This may or may not be true but it's the main reasons I chose RNY. If I had willpower to control my portions, I'd be a member of Weight Watchers instead of a surgery post op. I have several on line friends who have had very successful VBG surgery -- they are extremely pleased with their results. Hopefully they will check in here and give their opinions.

I would think it depends on what habits got you to the point of needing weight loss surgery procedures. If I had my absolute choice, I'd opt for duodonal switch, but I may not have that choice. My eating problems tend to have more to do with poor food type choices instead of amounts, so something like the RNY would be perfect for me. If I had the VGB, I might still carb load and skip my protein. I'm embarassed to admit I have such a stong weakness for carbs. If I had issues with portion control, VGB would be perfect!

I personally think this is a silly subject to argue about. They are all great life saving surgeries. I looked at the DS, VBG, RNY & the adjustable band. I chose RNY because my surgeon thought this would be the best for me. Incidentally, my surgeon only does RNY's and VBG's. I do like the way the VBG works, but after consulting with my surgeon, he thought the RNY was better for ME. Arguements over which surgery is best is both catty & childish. Good luck to you no matter what your decision is! And Congratulations on your engagement!

Whew! I NEVER bashed this site, Pam...cool your jets! lol!! I love this site. I'm here everyday, offering advice, learning....I also have never said one negative word at all about RNY and people who chose RNY. I never would. If your will read my note again, you will see that I said you will find a lot of INNACURATE info about VBG here. That is true, it is a fact....a well-known fact. I did not attack RNY advocates for that, I just stated the fact that in info is innacurate (because of lack of education and research for the most part). Because of that fact, I suggested that the poster join us at the VBG group to get a more accurate picture of that WLS choice. Yes, it is silly to argue over this, as another answer pointed out....I don't know why anyone would want to argue over it...
