Question:
has anyone been diagnosed with Nut Cracker Esopahgus, and turned down for surgery???
I have been told that I have nutcracker esophagus although I don't show any symptoms, and that there are high risks for surgery. Has anyone else even heard of this? — Cat W. (posted on November 1, 2001)

I went to google.com and typed nutracker esophagus into the search engine.
I found some very interesting information. While nothing I found pertains
to WLS, I did find out what it is. Here is one of the paragraphs that
explains it succinctly. "Nutcracker Esophagus is one of the
conditions caused by stronger than usual esophageal muscle contraction. The
cause of this problem is still unknown. Patients with Nutcracker Esophagus
present with severe chest pain that can simulate the pain of a heart
attack. Although the pain is very distressing, nutcracker esopahgus is not
a serious condition. Currently, there is no published data to indicate an
increased risk for esophageal cancer in patients with Nutcracker Esophagus.
The treatment of this disease usually includes smooth muscle relaxants such
as nitrates and calcium channel blockers, or antidepressant medications
such as Trazodone."
I hope this is somehow helpful. Shelley
