Question:
What makes you
I am terrified that somewhere during all these evaluations I will be denied for WLS because I am "unqualified" for surgery, despite the fact that my BMI is 46 and need to lose about 150lbs, my health is generally good, no significant medical comorbidities, however I do suffer from depression and binge eat. Has anyone ever been told they are unqualified and why? — Michelle F. (posted on August 30, 2001)

With a BMI of 40 or more, the NIH recommends WLS as a treatment for your
obesity. At that high a BMI, the obesity itself is the morbid condition.
A family history of weight related medical problems is also significant.
Even though you feel healthy, you may have problems you've simply ignored,
like hip, back and knee pain. Also you may be in danger of becoming
diabetic and your cholesterol is probably high. You may not be as
"healthy" as you think. On the other hand, if you aren't healthy
enough to survive the surgery, that CAN disqualify you. Are you worried
about qualifying with insurance or the surgeon? These are two different
issues. However, from what you describe, you sound qualified to non-expert
me.

Michelle, My BMI was 46 and my only comorbidity was high blood pressure,
but it was under good control with minimal medication. I too needed to
lose close to 150 pounds. My approval for insurance was practically over
night. Absolutely no trouble qualifying at all. I'm now 15 months post
op, down 139 pounds. It's wonderful!

If you are diagnosed with binge eating they may require conceling to get
this under control first, depending on the insurance you have. Your BMI
qualifies though usually without co-morbiites

Hi, I understand your situation - - believe me I did not get my size by
eating small portions, I was a binge eater. I had seen a psychiatrist for
over 3 years and was using medications to help curb my binge eating.
NOTHING AND I REPEAT NOTHING STOPED THE BINGE EATING EXCEPT MY ROUX N Y.
Please feel free to read my profile. I can't I believe that with this
surgery pschological help before during and AFTER THE SURGERY is very
important. I would consider changing surgeons if someone told me to stop
binging first. That was why I had a BMI of 62.7. If we could have done
this ourselves we WOULD HAVE ALREADY. Please look for a doctor who
understands obesity and it's disease. I was also severly depressed at 343
pounds 5'2", I was unable to do anything. My surgeon and the
psychologist that is in his office would be understanding to your plight.
So I hope you can find that where you live...Best of luck and keep me
posted. Many Regards,
— Karen Renee
