Question:
Belly Button!! Do they cut it?

I am very vain about my belly button, it seems like the only thing that hasnt changed when the fat kept creeping on. With an open RNY or RNY Lap do they cut open the belly button?    — Bethany M. (posted on August 13, 2001)

With the open RNY they got nowhere near my belly button. About 2 inches above it actually. As to the lap, I don't know with this operation, but when I had my gall bladder out by lap, they did cut about a one inch incision on the upper curve of my belly button.

My incision was very long and after the surgery my doc sheepishly said that he had to cut past my belly button since my torso was so short and my ribcage was narrow. Once I got a good look at it I thought it was terrible. He went around it, but he had to do what he had to do. If you want, I can send a pic. I expect it will fade, but I don't expect it to go away completely.

I HAD OPEN RNY AND MY INSISION GOES RIGHT BELOW MY BELLY BUTTON BUT NOT THROUGH IT. MY DOCTOR WENT SLIGHTLY TO THE LEFT. EVERY DOCTOR DOES IT DIFFERENT.

Seems like everyone worries about the "belly button" <smile> I've never heard of anyone cutting it. I doubt there is a need for it unless you get a butcher for a surgeon. Anyway my scar stops about 1 & 1/2 inch above it.

Well, I had a lap DS and my belly button was taped a little. I know they used it in the surgery (I think to pull my gallbladder out but I'm not sure). It was slightly cut open on the top and held together with surgical tape just fine. :) I'm not sure if they also use the belly button as a portal for lap instruments or to remove the gallbladder (if your surgeon does this even) but I know that my belly button was involved but not 'cut open'. All the best, (lap ds with gallbladder removal, January 25, 2001)

With LAP, I had a cut right above the belly button. It started at about 2 inches long (all of the tiny cuts did) and now, I have to hunt them down to find them! They are probably 1/4 inch long. They really shrunk. I go in for LAP Gallbladder removal this Friday and I think they may even use some of the original cuts, which would be nice. Or I will play connect the dots in a couple of month....

Hi, I had LAP on 7-30-01 and yes they cut my belly button, but only on the top but going in, not on the outside. I 'd say from looking that it's about a half an inch. Now that it's healing it's not very noticeable. My husband , when looking at my incisions, said he could hardly see it. Good luck!

Open RNY - 7/17/01. My scar starts about 3/4" below my bra line and ends in my belly button! It looks like he cut right into the middle of BB....so scar leads to it. I'm only a month post op and it seems like it's doing fine. Expect it to be tolerable. Good luck to you.

I found some small stitches inside my belly button. I'm not sure why or what they did. I do know that my belly button is smaller and prettier than it was. I had my surgery done lap. I hope this helps.

I had a lap RNY and one of the cuts is in the top of my belly button. It goes from the outside rim to the center. I don't think it'll be visible when the scar fades completely.

Hi Bethany, I had my gallbaldder taken out in Sept. of last year by lap, and the scar in/on my belly button is hardly noticable. You can only see it if you really, really look for it. Good luck!
