Question:
If I am lactose intolerant will lactaid help?
Will lactaid or other special milk usually be OK? I love milk and my doctor recommends it. I just wonder what alternatives I would have if I cant drink normal skim milk anymore... — bob-haller (posted on July 8, 2001)

You can buy Lactaid Milk or the Lactaid drops that are added to your normal
skim milk and it will nutralize the lactose. I don't think it effects the
taste of the milk either.

Bob, my daughter developed a significant case of lactose intolerance 3
weeks post-op lap RNY. Although our surgeon stated that some patients
"outgrow" this, she is now 18 mos. post-op and that hasn't been
the case for her. However, she buys Lactaid milk and carries Lactaid
tablets with her at all times which take care of her symptoms completely.
I was surprised that I could detect absolutely no taste difference with
Lactaid milk, and that it has a much longer shelf life than
"regular" milk. It also is available in low-fat and non-fat
varieties.

Hi Bob, I am 7 weeks post-op (Open RNY) and I tried regular milk a few
times and though I didn't dump, I did get some major stomach quesiness for
an hour or so. I tried the Lactaid and I had no problems at all. And yes it
does taste very similar to regualr milk.
