Question:
Did anyone else have these fears before surgery?
Hello everyone, I am scheduled for open RNY on July 20th and am starting to worry that something will happen and I won't be able to have this surgery done after all. I am worried that something will show up on my bloodwork (like I am fighting a virus or that I am anemic or something that will cause my surgery to be cancelled) Please let me know how you dealt with it to keep yourselves sane. I can't take this waiting and worrying. Thanks! — Dawn H. (posted on July 2, 2001)

I did. It's like something so wonderful has to be too good to be true. I
wouldn't even let my self believe that it was actually going to happen
until I woke up in recovery. I even got a sinus infection a week before
and was totally paranoid that it wouldn't go away in time. It did go away.
Then my surgeon was running late on surgery day. He finally came.

I too have had many fears regarding major surgery. I have been through 13
surgeries altogether. I am also a pesimist. I always seem to think the
worse will happen. I have learned though, that when my time comes, God will
take me; be it in my sleep at home, or on an operating table. It makes no
difference. I try not to think of these things anymore because all I do is
make myself a nervous wreck in the process and that makes everything even
worse. I try now to force myself to think of the positive side of things
instead of the negative. I have slowly realized that it does no good to
worry about what will happen next week or next month or tomorrow, for that
matter. The only thing we have control of is what is happening today, this
minute. Can't change yesterday, it's over. And I can't fix tomorrow, cause
I have no idea what will happen for sure. So I try to focus on now and what
I can do to improve today because if I can improve today, it might help
make tomorrow a little brighter. Try to think happy thoughts.
