I had alot of trouble early postop with protien supplements, and ended up trying many before I found one that I could tolerate. Some of the newer generation protien supplements are far more palatable. I use Extreme Pure pro, which is a powder you mix with water and it is thin like juice or koolaide. I also use Isopure pre-mixed, it is very thin, and the apple-melon flavor is slightly sour which goes down much better than the over sweet ones. I could not tolerate protien bars for many months, I would suggest you put them away until September or so. A local gym can point you in the right direction of a distributor, or you can e-mail me and I will send all of the info I can get for you. Don't give up trying, you do need the protien to heal as well as loose. You will find something that works for you.

Hi there I was like you in the beginning I had a hard time getting in the protien.. I like Designer Protein.. I couldn't handle the Choclate Flavored one.. and I was always a choclate lover.. but I drink the Strawberry just fine.. and the funny thing about it. Is that I never liked Strawberry drinks before.. I use 2 scoops and a half a Bananna and use my little hand mixer.. I also use Water to mix it with.. I can't handle to much milk.. So if you are using Milk to mix with your Protein that could be your answer? Anyhow, I drink one of these almost every morning and I am doing great.. I am one year post op and have lost 90lbs.. I still have 15-20 more lbs to lose.. and that has been hard.. good luck on your Protein .. Debbie

Run to GNC or the Vitamin Shoppe or a health food store and get pre-bottled Isopure. The clear drinks. They have saved me. I think the "shake" type drinks are so horrible. I pour these over ice and have 1/2 as an am snack and 1/2 as a pm snack. That is 40g of protein altogether and I try to eat the other 20 during the course of the day.

Hi Brenda: Try disguising your protien powder in fruit smoothies made with yogurt or sugar free pudding - you can't taste it there! Also, cottage cheese is a good source during the full liquid/puree stage. My best protein days are when I cook fish on the grill and I make enough for two meals...mmm! Good Luck to you!

Brenda: I got my protein without the bars or protein drinks. My surgeon said to use the first two weeks getting my protein from milk. I made creamed soups, sugar-free pudding, and ate sugar-free yogurt. I added extra non-fat dry milk to the creamed soups. Then, I was on to regular food and got my protein from nuts, beans, cheese, yogurt, meats, fish, eggs, peanut butter, etc. It was never hard to do.

i had that same problem for quite a while, i just couldn't stomach beef or chicken. and protein bars and shakes were out of the question. what has worked for me though is soup. surprisingly you can find a lot of protein in soup, just the broth even, personally i eat campbells vegetable beef, bean and bacon, and chicken noodle. if i eat very slowly they sit okay and i only try to do it once a day. i dont eat protein with every meal, that makes me feel awful. also remember that your proportions have changed. so the ratio of protein in your diet has changed, what i mean is that you cant possibly eat 20 grams of protien a day, it just wont fit, so i eat a portion of soup at lunch and that is all i need. also if you can stomach rice you can eat black beans and rice, they, together make protein. good luck.. sarah

I have to express some personal concern about the last reply. If a person "can't possibly" get in 20 grams of food protein a day, that boosts even more the need for protein supplements. If you only give your body 20 grams or less of protein a day, your body WILL canniblize your muscles. You will lose weight, but you will be in worse physical health than before your surgery. Remember, your heart is a muscle. Protein drinks aren't "yummy" for most people. Palatable is the most that many of us can expect. For others, it may have to be "hold your nose and gag it down time." Try to view the needed protein as neccesary MEDICATION for your body. Obviously, if you vomit or dump from the particular protein supplement you are using, you have to keep looking. You will find one that won't make you puke, but you may need to be persistant. Medication doesn't usually taste good - but we get it down if we have to. Please keep looking for a viable way to feed your body.

Everyone is different, and some can't handle it, but I drink 1% milk for protein. 1 cup has 8 grams, so 3 cups a day will get you to 24, about half your recommended daily consumption. My doctor recommends milk, and I have been drinking it since day one. The glass of milk fills me for hours. Most mornings it is the first thing I have. I have an extremely diminshed appetite, so thank God for milk.

You might want to check with your physician to see how much protein he/she recommends each day. Mine recommends at least 60 grams per day, and says 90 grams is best.

what about tofu or hummus, both have quite a bit of protein in it. Cottage cheese is also another thing that works well for me.
