Question:
Does anyone vomit just after a few bites?
I am seven weeks post op and for the first time I've thrown up. The first time, I had a small slice of pizza and it came up. The next day, I ate a small piece of chicken tenderloin and it came up. The next morning, I ate 1/4 of a bacon sandwich and it came up. Now I have a choking sensation in my throat at all times and I'm afraid to eat. Any suggestions? — bjw0713 (posted on May 26, 2001)

I am 4-1/2 mos. post op (RNY open). I have thrown up several times and it
was caused by not chewing my food well enough ... to mush. It always
drained me afterwards too.
I agree with Barb, you may want to go on the liquid route for a couple of
days.

i cant eat pizza unless it's crispy crust or i throw up too. most breada,
pasta, and rice make me ill. as for the chicken, possible you ate too much?
the sandwich again...maybe the bread? i have had bacon twice, i thought i
chewed it well, but that too came up. maybe you are eating to much, too
fast, or not chewing well enough. maybe you could try to lay off breads,
that helped me a lot. i am 12 weeeks post op now and i have thrown up
alot...this past week it has slowed down thought. it seems i am able to eat
a bit more than i was, so i think maybe i was just eating too much before,
even though i thought i was eating small amounts. i have also found that
taking small bites and waiting a bit in between helps things stay down too.
i hope this helps you

It happens to me sometimes, too. That's when I know NOT to eat whatever did
it for me. You mention three things that have all made me vomit. Not sure
why the chicken did (I don't have that problem any more), but anything with
bread in it I either avoid completely or take pains to eat very slowly and
carefully. When it expands, it blocks my stoma and I have to hurl it right
back up. No fun. And when I have that "choking sensation," I
don't eat anything--instead, I drink a lot of water
along with a shake, smoothie, or something along those lines. If I have any
discomfort at all before I plan to eat, I take some
liquid instead. That's what helps me, anyway. Good luck!

I had the surgery 13 years ago when I was 19 years old. I still, at 32
years old throw up after I eat too much! It doesn't go away! You have to
learn to eat what your body will digest easily. Through trial and error
you will learn.

When I was about 4 weeks post-op I had to have the stoma re-opened. It had
closed up due to scar tissue. That was about a week and a half ago and I
think it is happening again. It took about 10 minutes to fix since they go
down your throat with a camera and fix it. It was not a big thing at all
and they warned me that it might have to be done again. I was vomiting
everything, including sips of water. If this is happing to anyone out
there just talk to your doctor, a quick and painless upper GI can give the
doctor an answer. They sedate you for the opening proceedure and the most
pain I had was from the IV and the nasty stuff they spray in your mouth to
reduce the gagging reflex.
