Question:
How many weeks post op can we eat the following foods?
I had open rny on May 9 and was wondering after 2 weeks on soft food, when most of you were able to eat mayonnaise, salad, pizza, soft cheddar cheese, taco bell stuff and macaroni and cheese. Thank you so much. — Mary B. (posted on May 25, 2001)

Your surgeon will differ from mine on this. I was allowed regular food at
2 weeks postop except for raw fruits and veggies which had to wait another
2 weeks. Now, mayonnaise and macaroni & cheese may cause dumping due
to high fat content. Be careful with cheddar cheese early on especially if
you eat it alone (I dumped big time on this). Eating a little cheese
shredded with your food is probably ok now though. Some taco bell stuff
like refried beans is probably ok now, but some you may never eat. After a
month, you can try a hard-shelled taco. Chew the lettuce really well. The
softshell stuff is probably not going to work for you for a while though.
Stay away from the fried stuff. Pizza toppings may work soon, but I doubt
you will be able to eat the crust except maybe the edge of the crust.

We were clear liquids only (no milk, no sugar, but protein supps OK) for 4
weeks, then food. Mayo: OK. Cheese: grated only at first. Salad: 8 weeks
Mac 'n cheese: allowed at 8 weeks, but not by MY pouch! The pasta, no.
Pizza: did not evem interest me for the first 6 yrs, and only a little now.
Taco Bell stuff: isn't that a basic food group?

I know that all doctors are different with the diets they recommend after
surgery. I had cheese and eggs the day I came home from the hospital with
absolutely no problems. I had mashed pots with gravy, grits and oatmeal
while I was still in the hospital. When I got home I ate cream cheese and
crackers, and lots of baked pots. I have lost 247 pounds in 9 months so I
know it won't hurt you. I hope this helps.
