Question:
What do you think about these pre op preperations?
Pre-Op: Taking multi-vitamins formulated for AIDS patients. Fabulous Idea or Kind of Crazy? I am hoping to be pre-op soon and am of course terrified of the surgery (BPD/DS w/Dr Anthone) and all of the possibilities for complications (i.e. infection). So, I've had what I think could be a great idea...in order to rev up my immune system for the onslaught of hospital bacteria, I should perhaps look into taking the kind of supercharged vitamins that AIDS sufferers surely ingest. What do you think? Any ideas on brands? Also, in addition to drinking gallons of water and slathering myself with vitamin E oil, are there any other suggestions for boosting my skin's elasticity? Many Thanks! — Tracy W. (posted on February 25, 2001)

I am not sure if this is for certain, but I heard at the very end of a
talkshow once, that if you take fish-oil capsules while losing, your skin
becomes more firm. Like I said I just heard it. I am going to ask my
surgeon about it and make sure it's ok to take post op(that'll be a little
while for me). good luck.

My surgeon warned me about taking certain vitamins in the weeks prior to
surgery. I believe vitamin E causes more bleeding during surgery. I would
ask about this.

My doc had me take prenatal vitamins before and after surgery. I had open
RNY on 6/23/00 and he still has me taking the prenatals and vitamin c
everyday. I also take a zinc daily has I read (here at AMOS) that it would
keep me from losing hair and so far, so good. The prenatal vitamins are
available without a perscription and are not terribly expensive.
As for the vitamin E oil, it has worked well for me, I also slather on
cocoa butter. For the scar itself I am using Dermascar which says it will
help the scar fade faster.
Good luck and I hope this helps some!
