Question:
Do I need a bariatric bed?
First, what is a bariatric bed? Is there anyone who has had surgery with Dr. James Champion in GA who can share whether such a bed is provided? What are the advantages? — April B. (posted on February 24, 2001)

I'm not sure if the beds are automatically provided you may have to request
it. The bed is specifically for the obese patient and it allows you to get
in and out of bed more easily that your traditional bed. It actually lifts
you up somewhat to assist you in standing up straight off the bed versus
turning to your side and pulling up on the rail and then hopping off the
bed. Hope this answers your question. I am not using Dr. Champion but do
understand that he is an excellent surgeon - one of many. Good luck!

I had a bariatric bed in the hospital and it was the only negative
experience I had!! While it did make it somewhat easier to maneuver in and
out of bed, it was EXTREMELY uncomfortable. I feel that i would have been
fine in a regular bed!

April...I am using Dr. Waits in Atlanta and he performs his surgeries at
Northside Hospital on Johnsons Ferry Road. They provide bariatric beds. I
think it depends on the hospital. The post ops (I'm waiting for approval)
I've talked to have either used a recliner or a bunch of pillows in bed
propped up behind them...and it works for them. Good luck!

A big recliner is much more comfortable.
