Question:
I am having my 1ST meeting with DR, Hocking. Can anyone tell me what should I take with?

I HAVE A MEETING IN 3 WEEKS WITH DR. MICHAEL HOCKING IN FL AND WANT TO BE COMPLETELY PREPARED FOR THIS MEETING. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT HE WANTS YOU TO HAVE READY FOR HIM OR THINGS THAT WILL HELP IN SPEEDING UP THE PROCESS FOR HIM AND FOR ME. THANKS    — amy C. (posted on February 7, 2001)

The only suggestion that I have for youis write down your questions and things that you want to talk about! For me, my weight is a very emotional issue and my first Dr. consultation was like finally confronting it. I was so upset and emotional that I forgot to ask so many questions! Hope this helps a bit!

My surgeon gave me a packet before I ever saw him. It was nice to have some time to go over it. The basics are a diet history, especially anything you've tried and what you lost/regained. Don't forget to count exercise programs and diets you did that weren't formal, these count too. One other thing I did that really helped me. I went through all the medical records I could get ahold of and anyplace they recorded a weight. I then charted these over ten years. I was very surprised by the results. It was not the straight upward line I expected to see. I also typed up all my health care providers, addresses, phone numbers etc. so that the surgeon can contact them easily for medical history. The other thing my surgeon wanted was a statement about why I want the surgery and why I think it's the right thing for me. I had to cut myself off, I could have gone on for days but I was able to write a good paragraph. I think it's helpful to think about these things even if you don't get a chance to discuss everything. Finally, bring your questions. I was so nervous about what the surgeon would think that I forgot to ask half my questions. Fortunately I know I'll get other chances. Good luck!

What I brought with me to see Dr.Hocking was, a copy of my medical records, also a list of all the diets I have ever been on in my life, dr. supervised or not, and a list of questions to ask him. He will not rush you with your appointment, he is a very nice man. I know cause I will be having my surgery in 3 weeks.

First let me tell you that you chose a wonderful and talented doctor. Dr. Hocking did my surgery Feb. 23, 2000. Since then I have not had any major complications to speak of. Dr. Hocking does expect you to thoroughly study & research weight loss surgery and know all the pros and cons of this procedure. Please know that this is a tool and not a cure all. Dr. Hocking is a compassionate doctor with a large heart. His staff too. He will spend all the time he needs with each and every one of his patients, so please be very patient with him if he is running late when you go in for your appointment. You are not a number in this man's eyes, and you are a person. Write down all your questions and by all means bring as many of the family as you need too if they need reassuring so you can have all the support that you will need thru all this. I had no pain immediately after this surgery and I, for one would do it agian if I needed too. You are welcome to ask him about me if you'd like. If I can be of any help... please don't hesistate to email me at ... [email protected] ....... hugs and prayers........
