Question:
Why would someone post have a high fever?

Why would someone less than a week out of surgery be running a fever of 102 and unable to get it down?    — stevie W. (posted on January 27, 2001)

while i am not a medical professional, fever is a sign of infection...that may or may not be realted to surgery. if you know someone who has this...tell them to CALL THE DOCTOR!!!!!

Yes, CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!! I was told to take my temperature for the 1st week after I got home and some low fever could be expected, but if I had a high fever and it continued I was to call the doctor immediately. Don't let it go too long. Good luck!

One more vote to call the doctor NOW. Do you have abdominal pain with it? What does it feel like when you drink water? Still, call the doctor NOW. Even though it's a weekend, that's OK.

Hi, I really wanted to encouarge you to phone your physician. I am a critical care RN and a temp that high warrants a CBC and exam. It sounds like you could have an infection and the only way to tell is to look at your White blood count and then go from there with a physician's assessment. If you can't get in contact with your surgeon, then go to the ER. Good Luck to you.

Hope you did as they suggested, Stevie, and called the doc. I also hope that your temperature is over something minor. Good luck to you!

I am 10 days post-op, and last night I had a fever of 104.6. I called my dr. immediately, he said to come in in the morning for bloodwork, and until then, take Tylenol and a cool shower. I haven't been on antibiotics at all since surgery, but since I have no odd pain, it's not an urgent thing. Heh..

When I called the doctor with a temp 2 weeks post, he very calmly told my husband to get me to the emergency room QUICKLY. ( I was admitted for three days). Every surgeon is different, but I believe your discharge info specifies to call IMMEDIATELY if you have a temp above 100, can't hold anything down for 12 hours, etc... Post back and let us know how you are!
