Question:
Has anyone gotten life insurance before surgery????
I am not trying to be morbid, but I was thinking that I have no life insurance and IF anything was to happen to me, well, my spouse would be out there trying to raise three children and paying bills, and all that without the help of any life insurance from me. Is there a cheap(er) policy I can get? Has anyone else ever bought life insurance prior to the surgery? I just want to be able to help provide for the family, just in case. I have not tried to buy additional insurance because of the surgery but I
have previously made several attempts at purchasing private life and ltd
policies. I'll tell you straight - if you are obese enough to qualify for
this surgery I think you will have a hard time finding affordable
insurance. I could not get LTD at all due to my weight (at least that's
the reason they gave with the rejection). I have also been rejected for
several life insurance policies due to weight. We did find a term policy
finally that 'rated' me which means I pay higher premiums than someone of
normal weight. It's not too terrible but certainly more than we pay for my
nusband for twice the coverage. And my BMI is about 42 so I am on the
lower end (for morbid obesity).
I hope you have a better experience than I did. I would suggest finding an
insurance broker who can deal with several different companies. If you are
looking only to cover yourself due to surgery issues pick up a term policy
which will be cheaper than whole life, and you can cancel it if you want
later on. But in reality it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep it because if
you ever do develop health problems down the road the insurance companies
won't touch you (can't tell I have an attitude about insurance companies
can you!!).
Good luck...Karen

I purchased a policy several years ago and continue to hold on to it even
though I am covered by by employer. I am paying more because of my weight.
This policy is just a little icing on the cake. There are some eager
insurance agents out there who are willing to fudge a little on the
insurance application in order to make their sales. Some will "adjust
your weight" according to their weight charts and assume you gained
additional weight after you purchased the policy. I guess insurance
company's have a cut off weight in which they will stop covering.
