Question:
Is there an alternative to the contrast dyes?
I have read numerous times about x-rays before and after surgery that use contrast dye. I am allergic to contrast dye (spacifically ionic dye). Are there alternatives do use with contrast type x-rays? — Kris V. (posted on December 29, 2000)

I know that there are at least two contrast dyes commonly used. The
gastro-graffin and the barium solution. If you know that you are allergic
to both of those, I would mention this to your doctor and to the
radiologist who works with your doctor well ahead of time so they can make
other arrangements. I'm sure there is a way around this.

I know this answer is some months old, but I just had to add my experience.
I have had to have numerous contrast X-rays before to search out kidney
stones. I have a terrible reaction to Ionized dye. I told the doc, and we
tried non-ionized dye with a shot of benadryl and I have not had a problem
since. Just a suggestion that works for me.
