Question:
Has anyone ever had problems with pancreatits post-op?
I am almost 3 months post op from a VBG and have been hospitalized 4 times with pancreatitis. I do not drink alcohol and watch very closely what I eat. Anyone with any ideas? — K. W. (posted on December 26, 2000)

I didn't have a problem post -op. But once I took an antibiotic that was
way too strong for me and I ended up on an I.V. for 3 days due to
pancreatis. It sure was painful . Sometimes it's your meds or vitamins ( so
I've been told) that can affect your liver and pancreas.Good luck and I
hope you don't have any more episodes.

I had chronic pancreatitis pre-op. I was dying from it. I haven't had a
documented attack since surgery, although I probably had three attacks that
didn't require medical attention. The pain stopped with the pain meds I
have. My pancreatitis was caused from High Triglycerides. They stayed at
1200, and increased to over 4000 during an attack. My Triglyceride Level is
179 now, and cholesterol is 139!!! No more pancreatitis. Any level over
1000 can cause pancreatitis. If you have any questions, let me know. I
lived with it for over 3 years. Check out my profile, and see what WLS has
done for me. Good Luck, and God Bless You --

I am 6 1/2 weeks post-op (Open RNY) and just returned home from 12 days in
the hospital on IV's due to pancreatitis. My MD's are suggesting the
following: Zero fat in my diet until I go quite a while without any
symptoms, repeated labwork until my lipase levels are normal, lots of rest,
lots of clear liquids, and contacting my Dr. at the first sign of nausea or
pain, and going to the nearest emergency room and telling them I have a
history of pancreatitis at the FIRST episode of vomiting. I have no other
risk factors for the disease (don't drink, normal triglicerides, etc.) so
hopefully with close monitoring they think we can avoid a repeat episode.
