Question:
How to handle early pregnancy
I am almost 2 months and 1 week post-op. Everything has been going great. Lately, I have been very tired and not tolerating some foods very well. Well, are you guys ready for this one? I just found out last night that I am pregnant. Pregnant!!! No I am not disappointed, but this was not planned. I was not planning on getting pregnant for at least 1 1/2 years. It is out of the question for me to get rid of the baby. I won't even consider it, but I need advise. I need to make sure the baby gets everything it needs, but I just don't eat a whole heck of a lot. Do any of you have any suggestions. Both my husband and I are thrilled even though this was not planned. Help!!! — Becki S. (posted on November 16, 2000)

Becki, Congratulations!! I'm not an expert, but I'd say try to make the
best choices possible when you eat and drink, because the baby will get
what he/she needs from it FIRST! Also, don't forget those vitamins!! I
think a quick trip to your Doctor would be a great help to you!

Congreats on your great news Becki. I have never been pregnant but I do
know it's EXTREMELY important for your OBGYN to be FULLY informed about
your surgery and its nutritional aspects, otherwise this could be very
dangerous for the baby. Also, if you belong to a support group, seek out
other women who may have had this experience. They would be an invaluable
resource. Best of luck!

First, tell your surgeon that you are pregnant. If you have a
nutritionist, make an appointment with him/her too. The surgeon may
suggest that you go to a high-risk OB/Gyn. Then, go to www.egroups.com and
join a group called OSSG-pregnant, where you will find a bunch of great
women who are having babies after WLS. Some of them have gotten pregnant
soon after surgery just like you, and they will have good advice for you.
This is not an ideal situation, as you know. It will be rough on your
body, and nutrition will be of utmost importance, but it can be done. Good
Luck to you, and see you on egroups.

Becki,
congrats!!! Just to calm your nerves, babies are parasitic.
The baby will get the nutrition it needs. The problem is that if you don't
get enough nutrition, YOU will be the one robbed of the nutrition YOU need,
the baby will take what it needs, if need be it will get the calcium from
your bones and teeth, protein from your muscles, etc. Remember there are
many women out there who havent gone through WLS that have limited
nutrition the first 4months due to morning sickness. The doctors should
hook you up with specialist that will work on you getting enough nutrition
to keep YOU healthy during this pregnancy. Congrats again.
