Question:
ANYONE REGRET REVISION SURGERY BEING DONE

I saw my doctor and he suggested doing a revision to my open RNY to connect to my small intestines farther done. Has anyone had this done, and if so was it worth it. Did you lose more weight and was the healing time as long. Did you have to start all over on how the eating is done?    — Brenda F. (posted on October 20, 2000)

Brenda,it sounds as though your surgeon may be talking about a change from proximal RNY to distal RNY. or something very similar. In that case, you have greater malabsorption. That helps with weight loss, because fewer calories are absorbed, but the risk of malnutrition problems goes up, too. Be sure to ask about this tradeoff--how much more weight vs. risks-- specifically. If that is what he/she means re the type of revision, then your eating would not start all over (if you are doing it the right way now, that is), except for the few days after surgery while the internal connections healed. The surgery could take longer because of scar tissue from the first open RNY, and that raises the risk of compications a bit. Howver, if you are thinner and healthier overall, and not much older, the risks may balance out. GOOD LUCK!----Jesse
