Question:
What's the problem with fried food?

I mean in the "for life diet", one year or more after surgery. Would I be unable to heve fried food for life?    — [Anonymous] (posted on September 8, 2000)

Deep-fried foods like mozzarella sticks, egg rolls and fried shrimp make me dump after 2 bites. I just cannot tolerate the fat as well as the breading. Maybe you can take it because you are an individual and you will have to see however I do not recommend it because it is fattening and a bad habit to get started.

I eat fried food, unless they contain milk or sugar, which could happen in breading. Since RNy dont' absorb that much of the fats 'n oils, they're not ALL that fattening. But they don't taste as good to me as they once did. I usually do not choose fried any more, even though I've not had any bad experiences. I guess all I needed to avoid it was permission to eat it!

I'm only 5 months postop RNY, but I cannot handle deep fried foods. However, I can eat oven-fried chicken - skin removed before cooking. Here's what I do: melt some butter or margarine in a bowl, dip chicken pieces in butter, then shake in a bag of crushed corn flakes and bake til golden brown and cooked through. Now, don't eat too much - but it is good!

i cant speak for myself yet i am only 3 months post-op and have not tried fried food, but my husband is a year along and he still cannot tolerate fried foods at all. we use a product called fry magic it can be found in the baking aisle of the store, you can coat chicken and fish with it and then bake tastes like fried, yummmmmmy! i used it before our surgeries and even on potatoes it makes them like a potatoe wedge you buy. take care tina

I think the type of surgery you had would play a part in whether you can tolerate fried foods or not. I had prox RNY and don't have trouble with fried foods unless I eat too much. BTC gave us a guideline of 11 gm of fat per meal but I can eat up to about 15 or 20 before it becomes "too much". If I reach that point I'll have a stomach ache then a few hours later I'll have some gas, possibly diarrhea, but usually just gas. The only fried foods I really like are chicken and french fries. I can eat a fried chicken breast or medium fries with no problem. I eat the fried coating but not the skin of the chicken. I had two pieces of fried fish (with a little tarter sauce) and about 10 fries but that was too much! It takes a while to figue out what you can and can't eat...and how much.
