Hi Debra, I wanted to tell you that my acid reflux did go away. I no longer have to take my meds for it. I have lost a total of 80 so far and I seem to be able to eat anything even spicy foods. I am so happy I dont have to deal with the reflux any more. I was miserable with it. No matter what I did I would get sick. Good luck.

Yes! Oh thank heavens, yes it did! I had the WORST acid reflux ever. My greatest fear was to run out of Tums and I NEVER left the house without them in my purse. For years I have been sleeping on a mountain of pillows because sitting practically upright was the only way to keep me from vomiting in my sleep. But I am so happy to say I can sleep on one pillow now, flat on my back or side, and no acid reflux at ALL. I have to remind myself to take my daily calcium supplement. It is the very bestest benefit I've had so far of this surgery. (-65 lbs. since 4/25/00)

Hi Debra, my surgeon assured me that the RNY would "cure" my acid reflux problem, and I'm ecstatic to say that it certainly did! I'm 4 months post-op and have had Chinese, Mexican and Thai foods with absolutely no problems, and I wish the same good fortune to you!

My acid reflux went away right after surgery. It feels so good not to have it anymore.

Mine went away too!!! (Well I havent had symtoms yet anyways, Knock on Wood.) I didnt have it often pre op but when I did it was a killer. I didnt get the acid flowing into my mouth, I got a pain in the middle of my chest so bad that I felt I was having a heart attack. Almost went to the hospital one time!! It was my esoughagus squeezing and twisting so hard, trying to get the acid to go down. It really was dibilatating. But 4 months post and no episodes yet!!!

Hi there, To answer your question, yes, I had it terribly, but in two years, since surgery, I have had none, thank God. Linda

Debra: I had really bad acid reflux, daily, prior to open RNY surgery on 4/4/00. I have had NONE since. It is gone!

Debra, Hi. I had horrible acid reflux before surgery. Then when I got the surgery it went away 90% (Yes I still get it on rare occasions). As I understand it this benefit has come largely because I got my gall bladder removed not because of bariatric surgery. But I think both helped.

I did not have acid reflux before my open RNY. I have it now very often. My doctor says it is due to me eating wrong-too fast--too much. I don't feel that is true, I eat slowly--low fat--measure my food. I don't understand it. I have been checked for leaks--none found. I have asked for help from other peers from this site---nothing that helped. I guess I have to live with it. I take zantac(perscribed by my doctor) It doesnt help. It is not fun putting up with this.
