Question:
What can I do to control "killer gas?"

I suffer from terrible flatulance. I can't control it and I am always fighting it. I practically walk around with a spray bottle at work. Is there medication that works? What can I change in me diet? Sincerely, nancy    — Nancy H. (posted on July 17, 2000)

Hi Nancy... sorry about your 'killer gas', but there is hope! You can go to the health food store and buy acidophilus or you can order something called DEVROM online. I hear the DEVROM is really good. its an internal deodorant used for people who have colostomy bags , in order to reduce the odor. You can get a free sample by writing to [email protected] Ask for your free sample and include your name and mailing address. Also, you can buy something call OZIUM. It can be found in the automotive section at Wal-Mart or Target or usually at any car wash... this stuff eats up ANY kind of odor. Country Fresh scent is great! Let me know if any of these things help you.

Nancy, you may want to try an over-the-counter herbal remidy called Bean-o (spelling may be wrong) my wife insists I take it whenever I eat beans. It should work on more than just beans though. Good luck.

I find that too much fat in my diet and milk products (milk, sour cream and soft cheese) give me gas. I became lactose intolerant after the surgery. Take a close look at your diet and start eliminating things one by one to see if it helps the gas. When did you first notice the gas? Could it have been after you started eating meat? Could it be milk products? Do you eat alot of fat in your diet? Beans also give me gas but it is pretty much odorless compared to the fat/milk gas....that stuff is deadly!

Hi Nancy--once in a while I also get horrible, rumbling, explosive flatulence. It is never the same food twice and nothing I do for it seems to help--except, I found that if I mix up my protein and drink it, the gas calms right down. I don't know why it works, or even if it should work, but it does work and that is what counts. Try it, what can you lose? Good luck.

Milk & sugar are often the culprits. I even get a reaction to pancakes that are made by someone other than me. Milk. Once you have eleminated milk and sugar, you might look at fats. If I am going to eat chili, I put Beano on first, then "chase" it with simethicone. Simethicone won't prevent gas, but breaks it up so you don't bloat. Also, sugar alcohols can give plenty of gas in the sugar free stuff. That'd be sorbitol, manitol, maltitol... Since I have a distal RNY, I also take a special antibiotic daily to help control the amount of bacteria that is allowed to grow unchecked. This one does NOT cause yeast infections.

Just a follow-up from someone who tried the suggestions here: My husband and I ordered/used the samples of Devrom. We found them to make a definite improvement and have now ordered a supply for use.
