Question:
Has anyone had the jejunoileal (intestinal) bypass around 20 years ago?

I would love to communicate with people who had the same kind of surgery as me. I would also like to establish contact with former patients of Dr. Gamewell A. Lemmon who was a surgeon in Birmingham in the 1970's and 1980's who did my surgery. How are these people doing these days?    — pmscom (posted on June 17, 2000)

My mother had the jejunoileal intestinal bypass in 1971. Up until the past few years, she was in perfect health. Only recently, has she started suffering from many ill effects, which is baffling our health care system. She has severe asthma, choking sensations in the middle of the night, osteoporosis, facial flushing - caused by unexplained excessive high amounts of histamine release. Blind loop is suspected. But could the overgrowth of bacteria be the cause of her GERD-like symptoms and facial flushing? We are now considering a reversal, before her liver and kidneys start failing. Hope you are well, and if anyone can help me, or relate in anyway, PLEASE email me! Thank you

My mother has finally had the surgery reversed. A blind loop and bacteria overgrowth was found. In 4 months, she has gained 50 pounds and is now considering an alternative WLS. There are other effects that she has sustained as a result of the Jejunoileal bypass: very dry and aged skin (especially on her arms), red marks/blotches that come and go, unexplained HIGH levels of histamines which cause facial flushing and other outbreaks. She also suffers from Osteoporosis/Osteoarthritis. If anyone would like to chat/compare notes, please send me an email!
