Question:
Please help!!!
I got a referral to an in network surgeon today from my PCP but the HMO is refusing to acknowledge....They stated they do not cover anything "obesity related". It's only the first visit, I havent even applied for the surgery...Anyone got anything on this...HELP! — Renee C. (posted on March 1, 2000)

Check w/your HMO and look at some of the other insurances within
it. You might be surprised at what they might cover. Also,
be sure to list ALL the problems you are having with your
obesity and lastly, don't be afraid to challenge them. You
have that right. If they still don't approve you, find a
friend or get an attorney and draft a letter to them letting
them know you're not above challenging them - doing whatever
you have to do to get approved.

Just remember that obesity is not the same as morbid obesity. You can
always appeal and make sure your surgeon and PCP send documentation to the
effect that this is for treatment of morbid obesity siting the difference
between it and obesity. Best of luck.
